Friday brunch - royals on the box

Well, wasn't that lovely. We had a proper Brit style brunch to celebrate the Royal Wedding, with roast beef, yorkshire pudding, cucumber sandwiches, tomato soup, fish and chips, scones, apple pie and Pimms. Not to mention the food less likely to inspire cliched nostalgia: eggs benedict, waffles, pancakes, sushi,
oysters, anti pasti, cold meats, lebanese salads, parmesan chicken, rotisserie chicken, shawarma, pizza, whole roasted lamb, pasta, rice, fruit plates, cheese plates, cheese cakes, chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, chocolate slice, chocolate fountain, baklava, middle eastern puddings. And that's only what I can remember. It was overwhelming. I've now slunk off home for a lie down while the others have gone off for more drinks.

Here's the pudding table:

The Friday brunch really is the highlight of the expat week out here - a four hour all you can eat food and drink extravaganza. N and I have only been twice since we arrived because we fear the 'doha stone' that everyone talks about. I can certainly see how it happens.

N and I - drunk on all you can eat food, and all you can drink booze:

But seeing as this is the weekly highlight, I'm a little perplexed about how I'm going to entertain my friends who are coming out later in the month, arriving late on a Saturday and leaving Wednesday.
Now, for people used to London nightlife, Doha is not exactly rocking at the weekend. Mid week it can be desperate. Robbed of the hit combination of canapes and cava at Rendezvous on Wednesday night, Thursday night in the souk, a good old fashioned Friday brunch and a Saturday afternoon stroll round Katara, I'm totally stumped.

The best I can come up with so far is 'worlds wildest police videos LIVE!' - where I take my guests for a drive round Doha during rush hour so they can see the sort of driving normally confined to police helicopter footage, but with the exhilarating knowledge that it's happening all around them - for real. For more excitement (were more needed) we could take turns trying our luck on the crazy running machine in my gym that flings people off indiscriminately. These are only initial ideas.

  1. Sounds like we picked the wrong days!
I'm gonna bring my thick trousers for the gym mind. I don't fancy flying off on it's whim.
    It's less than 4 weeks.
